Claude Code vs Cursor: agent or AI editor?

Claude Code vs Cursor as of October 2026: terminal agent vs AI editor, models, plans, sandboxing, rules files, and Cursor alternatives worth trying.

Updated

Claude Code is a coding agent you run in the terminal (or as an extension inside VS Code, Cursor or JetBrains), billed through a Claude plan. Cursor is a full code editor with its own agent, its own Grok and Composer models, and Claude, GPT and Gemini at API prices. Pick Claude Code if you want Claude doing long tasks on a flat subscription; pick Cursor if you live in the editor and want tab completion, inline edits and many models in one place. They aren’t exclusive: Claude Code’s extension installs straight into Cursor.

As of October 2026. Cursor’s plans changed a lot this year, so check the links before you buy.

What each one is

Claude Code is Anthropic’s agent. You give it a task, it reads the repo, edits files, runs commands and asks before risky steps. It started in the terminal and now runs in the VS Code extension, a JetBrains plugin, the Claude desktop app and on the web (overview). It doesn’t autocomplete as you type. It does whole tasks.

Cursor is a code editor that imports your VS Code extensions, settings and keybindings, with AI throughout: Tab completions, inline edits, chat, and an agent that can run for a long time. It also has a CLI (agent, installed with curl https://cursor.com/install -fsS | bash) with Agent, Plan and Ask modes, plus cloud agents, automations and Bugbot code review (Cursor docs).

Claude Code vs the Claude Code extension

People also compare Claude Code with “the extension”. They’re the same agent. The VS Code extension, which installs in VS Code and Cursor, adds inline diffs, @-mentions, plan review and history in a panel, and shares your CLAUDE.md, settings and MCP servers with the CLI. You can also just run claude in Cursor’s built-in terminal. So “Claude Code or Cursor” is often “Claude Code inside Cursor”: Cursor for editing and Tab, Claude Code for the long tasks.

Models and pricing

This is where the two differ most.

Cursor (pricing) now sells plans that bundle Grok and X features:

  • Free: limited agent and chat requests.
  • Plus, $8/month: a shared usage pool, Grok models only.
  • Premium, $30/month: 4x Plus usage, cloud agents, Bugbot, third-party models.
  • Super, $100/month: 15x Plus.
  • Ultra, $200/month: 50x Plus.
  • Teams: from $30 per user per month.

The pool covers Cursor’s own models (Grok 4.7, 4.6, 4.5 and Composer 2.5) and refreshes weekly. Claude, GPT and Gemini aren’t in the pool. On Premium and up you pay for them at API list price from prepaid credit (models). If Claude is the model you want, every Claude token in Cursor is metered.

Claude Code (pricing) comes with Claude Pro ($20/month, $17 yearly), Max (from $100/month, 5x or 20x Pro’s usage) and Team seats. Usage resets on a five-hour and a weekly window, not per token. See Claude Code usage limits. You can also use an API key or a cloud provider and pay per token.

Rough rule: if you use Claude heavily, a Claude plan is the cheaper way to get it. If you’re happy with Grok or Composer, Cursor’s plans are cheaper to start.

Permissions and sandboxing

Cursor has three run modes in Settings → Agents. Auto-review (recommended) runs allowlisted calls, runs other shell commands in a sandbox, and sends the rest to a classifier. Allowlist runs only what you’ve allowed. Run Everything runs every call. The sandbox uses Seatbelt on macOS and Landlock plus seccomp on Linux (kernel 6.2+). Cursor falls back to asking when the kernel can’t (run modes).

Claude Code starts interactive sessions in auto mode (v2.1.283 and later), where a classifier reviews actions. Manual mode asks before edits and commands, acceptEdits approves edits, plan only reads. An OS sandbox for shell commands (Seatbelt on macOS, bubblewrap on Linux and WSL2) is off until you run /sandbox (permission modes).

Both converge on the same idea: a classifier for most actions, a sandbox for shell commands, and your answer for the rest. Claude Code permission prompts covers tuning them.

Config and extensibility

Claude CodeCursor
RulesCLAUDE.md, or AGENTS.md.cursor/rules/*.mdc, AGENTS.md
HooksLifecycle hooks in settings.json.cursor/hooks.json, about 20 events
MCP.mcp.json, claude mcp add.cursor/mcp.json, ~/.cursor/mcp.json
Plugins/plugin marketplaces: skills, subagents, hooks, MCPCursor Marketplace
Headlessclaude -pagent -p (add --force to write files)

A shared AGENTS.md is the simplest way to keep instructions in one file for both. Cursor’s docs don’t mention reading CLAUDE.md.

Where Cursor is ahead

  • Editing by hand. Tab completions and inline edits; Claude Code has neither.
  • Many vendors in one place. Grok, Composer, Claude, GPT, Gemini and others behind one picker.
  • Low entry price. $8 a month for Grok models.
  • Code review and hosting. Bugbot and cloud agents are in Premium.

Where Claude Code is ahead

  • Claude on a flat plan. Opus 5.5 is the default on every paid Claude plan; in Cursor, Claude is pay per token.
  • Editor freedom. It runs in your terminal, VS Code, Cursor or JetBrains, so switching editors doesn’t mean switching agents.
  • Cloud providers. Bedrock, Google Cloud, Foundry and LLM gateways for companies that buy AI there.
  • Scripting. claude -p in pipes and CI, plus the Agent SDK.

Cursor alternatives

If you’re leaving Cursor or comparing, these are the main options:

  • Claude Code: Claude models on a subscription, in the terminal or your editor.
  • Codex: OpenAI’s agent, open source CLI, ChatGPT desktop app and IDE extension. See Codex vs Claude Code.
  • OpenCode: open source, MIT, any of 75+ providers. See OpenCode vs Claude Code.
  • Antigravity: Google’s agent platform, which replaced Gemini CLI for most individuals. See Gemini CLI vs Claude Code.

Pick Cursor if…

  • You write a lot of code by hand and want Tab and inline edits.
  • You want to switch between model vendors per task.
  • Grok or Composer models are good enough for most of your work.

Pick Claude Code if…

  • You hand off whole tasks and mainly review the result.
  • Claude is your main model and you want it on a subscription.
  • You use JetBrains, a plain terminal, or more than one editor.

Pick both if…

You like Cursor as an editor but want Claude doing the long tasks. Install the Claude Code extension in Cursor, or run claude in its terminal.

Keeping track of several agents

Once Claude Code is running in a few Cursor terminals, the problem moves: which one is waiting on you? Each session waits in its own tab until you look. Run multiple Claude Code agents covers worktrees and tmux.

Coral is a Mac app (with an iPhone app) that lists every Claude Code, Codex, Copilot CLI, OpenCode and Grok session in your Mac’s notch, the one that has waited longest first. Answer with one key, or from your iPhone, and Show terminal jumps to the exact terminal, including terminals inside Cursor, VS Code and Windsurf. Coral doesn’t track Cursor’s own agent, only the agents it lists. It’s free, with an optional Pro plan. See Features.

Questions

Is Claude Code better than Cursor?

They do different jobs. Cursor is an editor with an agent; Claude Code is an agent that runs in your editor or terminal. Many developers use Claude Code inside Cursor.

Can I use Claude in Cursor?

Yes, on Premium ($30/month) and up, billed per token at API list price on top of the plan. Plus includes only Grok models.

What’s the difference between Claude Code and the Claude Code VS Code extension?

None in the agent. The extension is a panel with inline diffs and @-mentions for the same Claude Code, and it shares your settings, CLAUDE.md and MCP servers with the CLI.

Does Cursor read CLAUDE.md?

Cursor’s docs list .cursor/rules and AGENTS.md, not CLAUDE.md. Claude Code reads AGENTS.md when there’s no CLAUDE.md, so AGENTS.md works for both.

What is the best Cursor alternative?

For Claude models, Claude Code. For OpenAI models and an open source CLI, Codex. For any model and fully open source, OpenCode.
